It's only a few hours since Peter Prendergast had a violent argument with his younger brother, Brian, who has signed up to a radical form of religion since being released from prison. When he returns to his farm he finds two policemen waiting for him. They accuse him of attacking his mother and brother in their home and then of a murder in the Mayo General Hospital. New shocks arrive from unexpected directions.
In the space of two days Peter has to defend himself from a charge of murder and protect the woman his brother deceived. He is accused and helped by men like Charlie Dempsey, a reformed killer who travels around Ireland to save other murderers from falling back into crime; Sergeant Patrick O'Mahony, who has to deal with his own enemies in the Irish Special Detective Unit; and Father Patrick Keane who is suspected of the sins of the Catholic Church. The evidence that could lead to an innocent man or woman is blown to pieces in an unexpected climax.
Another Life eBook John J Gaynard JT Lindroos
"Another Life" is a murder intrigue telling the story of a family returning to rural Ireland to find a better life. But it doesn't work that way, their dream soon is destroyed by the religiosity of the mother, by a son involved with a radical religious group and by the raging feud between the two brothers. The story takes place against the backdrop of the rural landscape of Erris in West Mayo, in the small towns of Bangor Erris, Ballina and Castlebar. My thoughts:
This was a hard novel to rate, hovering between being very captivated in the intrigue and skimming over paragraphs during the long myriad of religious overtones and of the numerous sidebars that kept interrupting the flow. Leaving me with mixed feelings and wondering what could have been the real essence behind the words other than to highlight how zealous religious beliefs could destroy a person and affect family and community. On one hand I loved the way the author has creatively shaped the murder investigation by gradually inserting a variation of twists to derail us from guessing the outcome, IMO he did this expertly. Another high point is the memorable characterization, long after reading the story I still see Brian, Peter and the terrible mother. On the other hand too much focus was put on the effect of radical ideas and the repetitiveness became an annoyance thus I felt many times dropping the book. Although in retrospect this wasn't a bad book by any means, it surely will not make it to the top of my best read for this year..

Another Life eBook John J Gaynard JT Lindroos Reviews
A murder mystery set in Ireland that will keep you guessing till the end. Author John J. Gaynard's "Another Life" tells the story of a troubled family the Prendergasts, Peter the eldest son, Brian the troubled younger brother who spent many years in prison for murder, and their mother.
Peter and Brian have never seen eye to eye, and their is much resentment toward Brian by Peter when the older brother is forced to run the family farm, and pay the bills while his brother was away in prison.
Peter returns home after having a few drinks at the bar, to find the police waiting for him. His mother and brother have been viciously attacked , and Peter is the prime suspect.
The mystery takes another strange turn when the younger Brian is murdered in his hospital bed, and again Peter becomes the focus of the police investigation, as he had a small window of opportunity to commit the crime, and his fingerprints are found on the murder weapon.
Helped along the way by Father Patrick Keane, and Peters friends from the local bar, they set out to try to prove Peters inocence.
Was the murderer Peter? members of the religious cult that Brian help found? or perhaps revenge by members of the family that lost their son at the hands of Brian years ago? You will have to pick up a copy to find out, but you will be surprised with the answer.
A well written very descriptive murder mystery that I recommend to all
I bought this book because I am researching family history in Western Ireland and I am trying to learn more about life in that area – both now and in the past. The author, John Gaynard, was born in the area from which my family emigrated. “Another Life” fulfilled my desire to learn more about both that part of Ireland and the immigrant experience. The characters describe the family’s initial need to leave to find work, their problems trying to adapt to a new environment in England, and their difficulties in returning to County Mayo. They find themselves perceived as both natives and foreigners in both countries. This book, however, delivered far more than I was expecting. The characters are all well developed personalities who provide intelligent, interesting, and entertaining discussions on a wide variety of topics. The underlying theme of extremist religious views and radicalization are incredibly relevant in view of the current problems throughout the world. I found the exploration of this topic to be thought provoking and worthwhile. That said, this is also a wonderful detective story which can be enjoyed for that reason alone. It is the type of book that I looked forward to enjoying each evening, and I was sorry to let go of the characters once I reached the very satisfying, but unexpected ending.
